Great picture! Though I dunno about the "selfish" part. I mean, if your best friend all of a sudden said "Hey, you know how I'm always telling you I'm from another world and I can't wait to ditch this one? Well your sponsers are trying to attack my world so you have to quit your job with them right now" would you believe him and do what he said, especially if you knew you were dying and running out of time to complete your goal of giving your war torn, depression ridden country something to be proud of and leave your mark on it?. It wasn't so much selfishness as much as it was *not believing*. And I think everything clicked and Alfons realized Eds "storys" were true the minute Hess deliberatly let the cat out of the bag. And really, if Alfons were truly selfish, would he have sent Ed back to Amestris to reunite with his brother and stop Ekhart?.

Oooh, you sure know how to make a good point!
I called him selfish because I assumed that he knew his sponsors were kind of in cahoots with the Nazis, and though Edward pointed-out that his sponsors were a little wayward, he chose to go on building the rockets. Also, I believe Edward termed Alfons's reason to send him to 'Shamballa' as his way of being remembered and it struck me as something Alfons was doing more for himself than Ed.
But when Edward spoke about going back to his other world, Alfons got that hurt, disappointed look on his face. So I dunno. Perhaps it really was out of friendship.

Hmmm... Although yes, everyone knew that thule was in cahoots with the national socialist workers party, if you had told Alfons his sponsers were using his team and him to build rockets so they could exploit and destroy this other world that Ed talked about coming from (rather then be the first to travel into space as was the assumed purpose) I doubt he would have believed it seeing as he really didn't believe Eds storys anyway. I doubt Haoushofer, Hess or Ekhart ever once mentioned "Shambala" to Alfons or his team. As I said, it wasn't untill Hess revealed it near the end that Alfons realized it was all true and not just Eds fantasys. If anyone was being selfish, it was *Noa* because she knew Eds storys were real and she knew thules real intentions, yet went ahad and betrayed Ed anyway for herself.
And I doubt Alfons sending Ed back to Amestris was just for himself as a way of being remembered, no matter how Ed termed it; By then Alfons knew that 1. Ekhart was on her way to pillaging Eds world and Ed had to get there first and stop her, and 2. Eds real home and family were in Amestris and he would no doubt be *happier* there after dreaming of it for two years. I think Ed would have happily stayed in Amestris if not for the factors of the gate porthole and the uranium bomb.
